​Joe Turner’s Come and Gone follows Herald and Zonia as they arrive in Pittsburgh during the height of the Great Migration in search of Martha. During Herald’s stay at Seth and Bertha Holly’s boarding house, the residents both help and hinder Herald’s search. Upon Martha’s eventual return, Martha and Herald have a heated argument, resulting in Herald slashing himself with a knife and rushing into the street to free himself from the torments of his past.
