The Brady Street Bridge, officially known as the South 22nd Street Bridge, spanned across the Monongahela River from South 22nd Street in the South Side to Brady Street. Built in 1896, the bridge suffered from a weak infrastructure and after numerous maintenance attempts closed on May 3rd, 1976. Before it’s destruction in 1978, the bridge served as cover for the homeless population in Pittsburgh. August Wilson placed his character Citizen under the bridge after he travels North to visit Aunt Ester, as he like many other southern migrants during this time went without housing. |
